How to Recognize Phishing or Scam Emails
Scammers nowadays are also in latest trends updating their tactics and ways on how to scam people. This internet-related cyber-crime issue is not new to us, in fact hundreds to a thousand people are victim of this and lost millions due to this phishing schemes.
With our current situation, a global pandemic due to COVID-19, we are at risks. Most of us are under-at-home orders and some are working from home too and vulnerable to possibility of being scammed.
Phishers use a “good to be true” email or text messages to deceive you. Many people have been tricked by this schemes.
A way to steal your account numbers, PIN, passwords, social security numbers or bank details. Once they have the information, they could easily gain access to your important and confidential information.
Text Message scam can be recognized right away in different ways:
- no subscription to any promo and did receive text message? – it is a scam
- did not sign up for any network promo, TV-Ads and did receive text message? – it is a scam
- did receive a text message that you WON a huge amount of cash from institution, organization but not aware of it? – it is a scam
- did receive a text message from an Attorney, Financial adviser or Company Manager and just randomly saying you WON – it is a scam
- and a lot more, so be very careful.
While Phishing Email is a bit tricky however, this can be easily recognize with the email contents.
They may tells you a story that saying:
- There is a problem to your account and action needed. (Click Link)
- There is a problem to your payment information and requires update. (Click Link)
- Saying to reconfirm personal Information. (Click Link)
- Saying about the balance due and urgently to make payment. (Click Link)
- Say you are qualified to subscribe or register to a cash fund. (Click Link)
If you find the email looks so suspicious, then a cross-checking is needed and be a Cyber-crime Forensic Investigator, dare you it is pretty much fun.
To start with the investigation, 3 areas to look into:
- Email Subject: Common subject for Phishing Email
- Anything that says in the email subject “URGENT” or “Attention Required”.
- HyperLinks: Verify links and ensure that it is a domain link from the official domain website of the company.
- Check all the hyperlinks by simply hovering the mouse to a clickable button or link, this will show up the actual link which you will be routed to. If link is different from the Company domain link, then it is definitely a Phishing Email.
- Email Source: If email and domain source is from different domain not the actual domain of the company they are representing to, then its definitely a Phishing Email.
- It is important to always check the email source.

- Sender Domain
- It is important to always check the email source.
If you happen to receive an email, it is very much import to ask yourself if you have an Account from the Company or know the person who contacted you.
- If yes, check properly the email contents and the source or better contact the Company directly.
- If no, it could be a phishing scam. Be careful.
After all, it is our main responsibility to secure our accounts, data, and passwords. Be vigilant all the time.
